new location, new sign. carytown’s record, cd, and dvd store, plan 9 music, has been doing really well since they moved across the street. the space is more condensed and therefore looks better. and while the employees were packing up to move, they came across this circular sign from the 80s, which appeals more to the passerby.

inside, plan 9 is rows and rows of music. from newly released vinyl of alabama shakes and mumford & sons to $1 dirty dancing soundtrack records, there’s something for everyone. there’s a record player in the back on which to try out some new taste, but the cashiers are more than happy to play it over the store stereo too. you can’t beat the customer service.

those guys know what they’re talking about when it comes to music. every time I’ve gone in and bought records, they strike up a conversation with me about the music and about the artist. they know what their customers like, and posters advertising for concerts and festivals are pasted all over the counter and outside to expand the music culture of richmond.

plan 9’s customers buy mostly vinyl, but they boast a cd and dvd collection too. there’s even a vintage magazine shelf and huge posters from richmond folk festivals of prior years for $5.

plan 9 is cool without even trying to be cool. having been around for 31 years, they’re well-versed in music and specifically, music in richmond. so peek in, flip through the records, and you just might try and buy something you never thought you would, like reggae, jazz, or even r&b/rap. and that’s just what they want you to do.

Eric Hutchinson gets it.  He understands as well as anyone that music is meant to be a shared experience.  His songs simply beckon you to sing along, even if you’re in the car alone.  Imagine how strong that desire will be when he comes to the Jefferson on December 5th
